A Guide to Bypassing a Transponder Key
A transponder key is an additional layer of security that alerts the car that a proper key has been placed inside the ignition. Transponder keys have special electronic coding that has the same frequency as your car. The programming of these keys can only be done by experienced locksmiths or the dealership from where you got your car from. Transponder keys are expensive to replace, here is a guide on how you can bypass them if the situation arises.
Step 1
The first step is to hold the plastic head of the transponder key with a pair of pliers in order to remove the head of the key. If the head does not come off easily, your best bet is to grab the flat part of the key with pliers and pull from both sides, in opposite directions. Remember not to place the pliers on the key’s teeth, as this can damage the key and the key will not be able to work in the ignition if damaged.
Step 2
The second step is to take a small portion of hot glue under the steering, near the ignition, and then place the key’s head on top of the glue. Make sure you place the glue as close to the ignition as possible.
Step 3
The third step is to test your partial transponder key by placing a key in the ignition. The mechanism of this method is that as the transponder key is placed close to the ignition, will trick the car into starting without having the transponder key fully inserted. A plain cut key can then be used as a duplicate.
Other ways
There are multiple ways to bypass transponder keys, some of these ways are:
- Rewiring the system of your car will allow you to bypass the transponder key
- A bypass kit will also allow you to bypass the transponder key and make your car totally keyless.
- Another option is to permanently glue the transponder key head underneath your steering wheel.
Caution
The transponder key adds a layer of security to your car and prevents car theft through hot wiring. If you bypass the transponder key by placing the key head close to the ignition, it can pose a security threat, because then the additional level of security will be removed. Now your car can essentially be started with a normal key or even hot wiring.
Final Word
Bypassing a transponder key is not very technical and there are more than one ways to go about it. Items needed to bypass a transponder key are typical items that are found in all households; glue, pliers, and spare key! It can be a convenience but is also somewhat risky as it compromises the security of the car and makes it susceptible to car theft.
