Many homeowners believe that by installing multiple deadbolts on their front door will upgrade its security. It makes sense that by doubling the locks it means your door is twice as hard to break into, but the real question is, Does it really worth the time and money?
The Effectiveness of Extra Deadbolts
When considering to install more than one deadbolt may seems to be like a smart idea in reality adding an extra deadbolt will increase the door’s resistance of being kicked in by about 10% and in most cases the extra lock won’t make enough of a difference to justify the extra work especially if your door is already fitted with a high-quality deadbolt.
Burglar Deterrents
Some people think that by having 2 deadbolts installed on their front door will stop a thief from trying to pick their locks, but skilled burglars can pick locks quickly no matter how many there are. If a thief made up his mind to break into your home having multiple locks won’t stop him. Instead of focusing on the number of locks it is highly recommended to focus on having one high-security, tamper-resistant deadbolt lock, not only it provides better security but also much more continent than having multiple deadbolts.
When Extra Deadbolts Make Sense
While one good bolt is usually enough, there are exceptions where installing a second deadbolt can be very helpful. For doors that are larger than standard door, for example extra tall or wide doors, a second deadbolt can provide more support and while one deadbolt lock installed in the middle of the door the other one can be installed down lower to make it harder for someone to force the door open.
